FAQs

  • The design journey can take many paths but a typical interior design project will generally follow these five phases:

    1. Programming Phase: In this initial phase, the interior designer works closely with the client to gather information about their needs, preferences, and project goals. This includes understanding the desired functionality, spatial requirements, aesthetic preferences, and any specific requirements or constraints. The designer conducts interviews, site visits, and discussions with the client to establish project objectives and gather essential information.

    2. Conceptual Design Phase: In this phase, the interior designer develops the design concept based on the information gathered during the programming phase. They create mood boards, sketches, renderings, or other visual representations to communicate the overall design direction, including the style, theme, color schemes, and general layout of the space. This phase focuses on exploring different design options and refining the concept in collaboration with the client.

    3. Design Development Phase: Once the client approves the design concept, the interior designer proceeds to the design development phase. Here, the designer refines the design, further developing the floor plans, elevations, and material selections. They create more detailed drawings and specifications that communicate the design intent to contractors, architects, and other project stakeholders. This phase may also involve additional research, product sourcing, and collaboration with suppliers or manufacturers.

    4. Construction Documentation Phase: In this phase, the interior designer creates comprehensive construction documents that serve as a guide for implementing the design. These documents typically include detailed floor plans, elevations, sections, material specifications, finish schedules, and any other necessary information required for the construction or renovation of the space.

    5. Construction Administration Phase: Once the construction documentation is complete and approved, the interior designer enters the construction administration phase. During this phase, the designer works closely with contractors, suppliers, and other professionals involved in the construction process. They provide clarifications, address any design-related issues that arise during construction, review and approve shop drawings and samples, and conduct site visits to ensure that the design is implemented according to the plan and meets the client's expectations.

  • I work closely with my clients to establish a realistic budget based on the scope of the project, desired quality of materials, and any specific preferences you may have.

  • Absolutely! I'm happy to incorporate existing pieces into the design. Your favorite pieces and memories are often what makes the space special and uniquely you.

  • Timelines vary depending on the scope and complexity of the project. A one-room project can range from a few weeks where an entire home remodel will take several months for larger, more extensive designs. We can work closely to establish a realistic timeline.

  • While both interior designers and interior decorators enhance the interior environment, there are key differences between the two professions. Interior designers, like myself, are trained in spatial planning and often work on projects that involve structural changes, such as altering the layout of a space, adding or removing walls, and ensuring that the design adheres to building codes and regulations. This comprehensive approach allows us to create functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces tailored to the client's needs.

On the other hand, interior decorators primarily focus on the aesthetic elements of a space. Their work typically involves selecting color schemes, furnishings, fabrics, and accessories to create a cohesive look. While decorators play a crucial role in beautifying spaces, they do not typically engage in structural planning or changes.
